What is a duvet cover set? It is a pack built around a removable cover for a filled duvet or comforter. It often adds matching pillowcases or shams. The insert, sheets and extra cushions in the photograph may be separate. Read the included-pieces list before you order.
A duvet cover set supplies a cover and the other pieces named in that pack's description. It doesn't automatically include a duvet insert. Check the count, dimensions and type of each piece. A sham is a decorative pillow covering; it isn't a filled pillow. Compare the cover with your insert, then match the cases or shams to the pillows you own.
What is a duvet cover set: read the pack list
The word set has no single piece count you can safely assume. A twin pack may have a different count from a king pack in the same range. Open the details for the exact size and color you plan to buy.
| Listed piece | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Duvet cover | Finished width and length; opening and ties |
| Pillowcase | Number, size and closure |
| Pillow sham | Number and insert size; any decorative border |
| Filled insert | Whether it is explicitly included |
| Sheet | Whether fitted or flat, and the dimensions |

Count the items in the text, not in the styled photograph. Extra pillows can make a small set look much larger. A fold at the foot of the bed may be a separate quilt or blanket.
Compare a cover set with a comforter set
A comforter set includes a filled top layer when the listing says so. A duvet cover set centers on the removable shell. These are different purchases even if their bed photographs look alike.
The Company Store's jersey comforter set, for example, lists a comforter and shams, with the sham count changing by size. That is a pack-specific description, not a rule for other sets. Its included-pieces list shows the sort of detail to find before buying.
Check the dimensions of every piece
Measure your insert flat and compare it with the cover. Then check your pillows. A king cover can come with king shams that are too long for standard pillows. Matching colors won't fix that gap.
If a sham has a border, check whether the listed size describes the insert space or the outside edge. Don't force a pillow into a small opening to get a full look. Use the maker's stated insert size. Our pillow size chart helps decode the labels.
Plan the wash as separate items
Read the label on the cover and on the filled insert. You may wash the cover on its own while caring for the insert by a different method. A washable outer cover is not permission to machine-wash everything inside it.
Keep the pack description or label details with your order record. If one piece is missing, you'll have a clear list to compare. Don't use a retailer's broad bedding category description as proof of what your exact pack contains.

Frequently asked questions
Is a duvet cover the same as a flat sheet?
No. A duvet cover encloses a filled top layer and has an opening. A flat sheet is a single fabric layer that can sit between you and the cover. You may use both, but they do different jobs. Neither item automatically comes with a set unless the pack says so.
Do shams come with pillows inside?
Only if the description explicitly includes filled pillows or inserts. A sham normally names the covering. Check the listed insert dimensions and the count. If the pack says two shams, don't read that as two pillows. A bed photograph often shows filled pillows for styling without including them.
