How to wash down pillows starts with checking that the label permits washing the filled item. Some makers allow a cold gentle wash; other constructions need a different route. Inspect the seams before wetting the pillow and plan enough time to dry the center completely.

Use the exact pillow's wash and dry label. Protectors and cases come off first. Check the shell for damage, use a suitable machine and follow the stated cycle. When tumble drying is allowed, use the maker's heat setting and dry through the middle. Don't store a pillow with damp clumps, and don't apply down instructions to a foam-filled pillow.

How to wash down pillows without guessing

Find the fiber and filling labels. A pillow sold with down in its name may contain a blend or several chambers. Check the full construction rather than treating the name as a complete care instruction.

Pacific Coast's current laundry guidance allows cold gentle washing for its standard pillows, subject to the sewn-in label. Its comforter advice is different. Don't carry pillow instructions across to a comforter from the same brand.

Prepare the pillow and machine

Remove the case and protector. Look along seams and around any opening for holes or weak spots. If fill is leaking, stop before loading the washer. Ask the maker about repair or replacement rather than letting wet fill escape into the drum.

Check the machine manual for bulky items and balance rules. A large pillow must have room for the wash process. Use a suitable larger machine if your own manual or the pillow maker calls for it. Don't force the door closed over a compressed load.

Measure detergent rather than adding an extra dose for luck. Use only a cleaner allowed by the pillow instructions. Keep bleach and fabric softener out unless the label permits them. Harsh stain treatment can damage a shell even when the filling itself is washable.

Rinse, then check the center as it dries

Follow the stated rinse instructions. Where an extra rinse is allowed, it can help remove remaining suds. Move the wet pillow with care rather than pulling on one seam. Don't wring it unless the label specifically says to.

If tumble drying is permitted, use the label's setting. Pause as needed to check and gently separate clumps when the maker allows that handling. Use dryer balls only if the maker recommends them. They don't make a wet pillow dry on a fixed schedule.

Let the pillow cool before the final check. Feel across the center and corners for damp clumps. A warm, dry surface doesn't settle whether the inside is ready. Don't put the pillow back inside a closed protector or storage bag until it is fully dry.

Stop if the process doesn't fit the item

If the label says spot clean, don't turn that into a bath or a full machine wash. If it says dry clean, ask a cleaner to follow that instruction. A missing label calls for model identification, not a guessed cycle.

For other fill types, use how to wash pillows. If a pillow stays lumpy or damaged after correct care, use the replacement checks rather than washing it again and again.

Frequently asked questions

Does every down pillow need hot water?

No. Use the exact label's temperature. A broad household cleaning rule is not permission to exceed the maker's instructions. The shell, finish and internal construction can all matter. Check cases and protectors separately, since they may allow a different wash from the filled pillow beneath them.

How long should drying take?

There is no reliable single time for every pillow. Fill amount, size, machine and heat setting all matter. Follow the maker's method and keep checking the center. Don't put away a pillow just because a timer has ended. It must be dry all the way through.
